Registration for Kindergarten and any Grade One students new to Hampton Schools will take place from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. as follows:

Frequently Asked Questions About Kindergarten
Q. What does a typical kindergarten day look like?
A. Hampton offers a half-day kindergarten program at each of our three elementary schools. The morning session begins at 8:30am and ends at 11:10am. The afternoon session begins at 12:35pm and ends at 3:15pm. The District provides transportation to school for the morning session or home from school for the afternoon session. Families are responsible for arranging mid-day transportation either from or to school. Kindergarten students participate in a rigorous curriculum that includes reading, mathematics, science, social studies, art, music, physical education, and library skills. Detailed information about each aspect of the kindergarten curriculum can be found here. Throughout the year, kindergarten students also participate in special events like the Thanksgiving Play, 100th Day of School Celebration, and Field Day among others.
Q. How do I know if my child is ready for kindergarten?
A. If your child is 5 years old by August 15th of the year that he/she will begin kindergarten then you may register for kindergarten. For example, if your child would enter kindergarten for the 2018-2019 school year, he/she must turn 5 years old on or before August 15, 2018. In addition to your child’s chronological age, you may also want to consider if your child is developmentally ready for kindergarten. Your child’s preschool teacher is an excellent resource for this information. Q. Can my child start kindergarten early?
A. Children who will not be 5 years old by August 15th of the kindergarten year may request special permission to enter kindergarten early if they will turn 5 by November 30th of the kindergarten year. Parents interested in pursuing this must submit a written request to the building principal by April 15th of the year prior to kindergarten entry year. Parents must also have the child tested by a private psychologist to determine developmental readiness for kindergarten. The results of this testing must be submitted to the building principal who will review it with the school’s Child Study Team. Additional testing may also be conducted by a member of the school team before a final decision is made. For additional information, parents should read School Board Policy 201.
Q. My child completed kindergarten in a full-day program, can I enroll directly into 1st grade?
A. Children who will be 6 years old by August 15th of the first grade year may enroll directly into first grade. Students who are entering Hampton Township Schools for the first time as first graders are encouraged to register early. Parents may drop off registration materials during the kindergarten registration days, held annually in February, or anytime thereafter.
Q. What do I need in order to register for Kindergarten?
A. Please complete the registration packet that is linked on this webpage and bring it with you when you register. If you cannot print the packet ahead of time, registration materials will be available at your school. You will also need to bring the following documents to registration:
1. One Proof of Age
- Child’s birth certificate
- Baptismal records
- Prior School records
- Visa or Passport
2. Two Proofs of Residency one from list A and one from list B
- A: closing documents, lease agreement, rent receipt, or district residency form
- B: utility bill, cable bill, driver’s license, paid wage tax receipt, guardianship form, or court order
3. Proof of Immunization (should be up to date before the start of school)
Q. What is the DIAL-4?
A. The Developmental Indicators for the Assessment of Learning, commonly referred to as the DIAL-4, is a kindergarten readiness screener that many school districts use to determine a child’s skills before entering kindergarten. It provides information about gross and fine motor skills, self-help skills, social skills, early language skills, and basic concept skills. Hampton uses the results to help our teachers prepare for the incoming group of kindergartners. It is NOT a test to decide if a child can enter kindergarten. Children who are registered for kindergarten are asked to participate in the assessment in the late spring prior to the kindergarten year. More information about dates and times for testing is provided during the kindergarten registration process.
Q. How are Kindergarten classes formed?
A. We take great care in creating classroom environments that are supportive of all learners. The classrooms are balanced by student gender and the results of the DIAL-4 kindergarten readiness screener to assure that all classes are heterogeneous. Please refrain from making AM or PM requests as we are obligated to have heterogeneously balanced classrooms.
Q. What if my child has special needs?
A. Students are eligible for special education and enrichment services. This process begins in the classroom, where all teachers provide instruction that is differentiated to meet student needs. Differentiation allows teachers to match tasks to student ability, interests, and achievement levels. Classroom teachers may also seek support for students via the specialists in the building, which include Math Support, Reading Support, Special Education, Enrichment, and Speech and Language teachers. Students are identified for extra support or enrichment based on a number of different factors including but not limited to, standardized assessment scores, classroom grades, parent concerns, and teacher recommendation.
Q. How do I get involved in the PTO?
A. Each elementary school has its own Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) that helps to plan and host special events and activities for the students. All parents are strongly encouraged to become active and involved members of the PTO. For information specific to your child’s school, please use the links below.
Q. What school supplies does my child need to bring to kindergarten?

Q. When will I find out if my child is in AM or PM?
A. Notifications of AM/PM placement are mailed by the end of June each year. Classroom teacher assignments are sent via email in mid-August.
