ARTS AND CRAFTS COURSES

BEGINNING KNITTING
COURSE # AC101
Instructor: Karen Wheeler
In the first session, students will learn to knit, purl, cast on and bind off stitches. In the second session, students will learn how to select a basic pattern for either a simple dish towel or scarf to begin in class and complete on their own.

PET PORTRAITS
COURSE # AC102
Instructor: Kate Powell
Students will practice drawing from a reference image of their pet, build contrast with light and dark values and explore drawing techniques in graphite, charcoal and pastel.
One Session (3 hours) - April 12

PAINTING WORKSHOP

Join friends and neighbors for a fun and relaxing painting experience. Follow the instructor step-by-step through the guided painting and learn about color theory and composition along the way.

SOCIAL MEDIA 101: WHAT PARENTS AND GRANDPARENTS NEED TO KNOW

Speaker: Phillip Little, Education Outreach Specialist for the PA Attorney General
The presentation will focus on the social media sites that children use, and how to keep children safe while they are using them. Learn how to enable security features on apps, why it’s important to know passwords and how to monitor behavior and interactions.

Google Drive provides users with the ability to collaborate and communicate with others on the same project from different computers. Participants will learn how to create or upload existing files to Google Drive and how to create and collaborate on slides, documents and sheets.

This course covers the basics of Microsoft Excel. Participants will learn how to create address lists and mailing labels for invitations, how to create a budget, and how to manage a guest list.

GARDENING TIPS 101

CPR FOR LAYPERSONS

You never know when you will need to use these skills. Participants will learn CPR, rescue breathing, and AED usage. Participants will receive CPR certification at the conclusion of the course.

Want to eat healthy but have limited time and resources? This class explores ways to select, prepare and serve meals and snacks that fit your health needs - on time and under budget. Participants will watch cooking demonstrations, sample tasty treats, and explore new trends in nutrition. Food choices will be adapted to meet the participants’ age groups, health needs, budget and timeline.

CIVIL WAR: THE BATTLE OF ANTIETAM
COURSE # HA101
Instructor: Kevin Green
This was the bloodiest day in American history. The battle led President Lincoln to release the Emancipation Proclamation, changing the nation forever. Participants will study the events leading up to the battle and analyze decisions made. Time for debate and role-play will be provided in each session. An optional, one-day field trip to the battlesite also is included.

INTRODUCTION TO POETRY WRITING

FILM STUDIES: WHAT MAKES A GREAT FILM GREAT?

Learn the five elements to making a great film: story, design, cinematography, sound and editing. Participants will view select movies in their own home, and discuss how each film used the elements effectively.
