HMS Students Explore Career Paths
New this year, the Hampton Middle School Counseling Department organized career assemblies to provide students with the opportunity to hear from professionals from a variety of career paths and learn about their occupation and path to success. Presenters were asked to discuss a variety of aspects, including their interests and passions, education needed to obtain the position, working conditions of the job, and an example of a “day in the life” of their career.
Dr. Kurt Weiss (pictured above), a Hampton parent, was the third presentation of the year. Dr. Weiss is an Orthopedic Surgeon and assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery, Division of Musculoskeletal Oncology at UPMC, and an orthopaedic surgical oncologist. He specializes in orthopaedic cancer care. He is also a surgeon/scientist who directs a basic science laboratory dedicated to bone and soft tissue tumors.
Dr. Weiss discussed his personal journey into the medical field, and engaged the students with pictures, props, and information about his profession and passion for medicine. He encouraged students to focus on determining their passions and to follow their hearts, while emphasizing the need for persistence and hard work. Dr. Weiss reminded the students that nobody has become successful on their own; it takes a lot of support to achieve success, from your teachers, family, friends, and others who touch your life.
HMS would like to thank Dr. Weiss, The Mushinsky family (owners of Fit 4 Boxing), and professor of computer science from CMU Mr. Mark Stehlik for their time presenting to our students. We look forward to hearing from attorney Mr. Eric Weinheimer, jewelry designer and business owner Mr. Paul Bierker, and first response professions including EMT and firefighters coordinated by Mrs. Christine Tunstall coming up in future sessions.
