Persistence and patience paid off this year for Hampton Middle Schooler Daniel Farrell, who recently competed in and won top honors in the annual Ford Junior Grand Prix contest. The event was held at the Neighborhood Ford Store's Kid's Pit Stop in Schenley Park during the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.

Daniel, a seventh grader at Hampton Middle School, has competed in the event in years past, but this year, he took top honors. Daniel's father serves as the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix Volunteer Coordinator of the Walnut Street Invitational Car Show, a feature event of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix.

A favorite of the children who visit the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, the Ford Junior Grand Prix presents the opportunity for youngsters to build vehicles out of interlocking blocks and send them racing down a track in attempts to get the shortest elapsed time to the finish line.

"The intensity of the children making their vehicles in incredible," said Dan Taylor, 2016 Chairman of the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix and Neighborhood Ford Store Board Member. "From the tiniest of the kids, to the ones who have competed year after year, this competition really captures their attention. They are all determined to win."

Dr. Michael Loughead, HTSD Superintendent, said it is great to see students applying the skills they've learned inside the classroom on something they enjoy. "This is a real tribute to the kinds of great things our families are doing," he said, offering congratulations to Daniel on his big win.

The trophy presentation took place at Shults Ford Lincoln in Wexford. The trophy and prize were awarded by John Huselton, Shults Ford General Manager.
