Team Poff Provides Epic Sendoff to Retiring Principal

Team Poff doesn't mess around when it comes to providing an epic sendoff to a beloved principal who is retiring after 18 years. On Wednesday, June 8, students, faculty and staff joined together one last time to provide Dr. Michael Mooney with the surprise retirement assembly of a lifetime.

Lured to the multipurpose room under the guide of a leaky water pipe, Dr. Mooney was met with chants of "Team Poff" from the entire building. Staff members performed a play entitled "18 Amazing Years," which was a remake of the infamous Thanksgiving play Dr. Mooney adores to include the story of his life at Poff Elementary School. Following the play, Dr. Mooney was presented with a memory book of his time at Poff that was created by the students and staff. A video rendition of "How Well Do You Know Dr. Mooney?" also was shown, with students attempting to answer questions about their favorite principal. But the surprises didn't end there.

A very special guest - the Pirate Parrot - stopped by to help deliver some very special news to Dr. Mooney. In addition to a customized Pirates jersey and tickets to the June 12 Pirates game against the St. Louis Cardinals, the Parrot presented Dr. Mooney with a letter from the Pittsburgh Pirates management, indicating they would be honored to have Dr. Mooney throw out the first pitch at Sunday's game. Dr. Mooney played for four years at the minor league level with the Boston Red Sox, beginning in 1970, before pursuing a career in education. Baseball, along with education, have remained two of his passions over the years.

Dr. Mooney thanked the students and staff for the best retirement sendoff, and said he would never forget his time at Poff.
