PA Core Standards
Core State Standards
The PA Core State Standards Initiative is a state-led effort to establish a single set of clear educational standards for English-language arts and mathematics that states can share and voluntarily adopt. The standards have been informed by the best available evidence and the highest national and international standards. The standards were designed by a diverse group of teachers, experts, parents, and school administrators, so they reflect both our aspirations for our children and the realities of the classroom. These standards are designed to ensure that students graduating from high school are prepared to go to college or enter the workforce; and so that parents, teachers, and students have a clear understanding of what is expected of them. The standards are benchmarked to international standards to guarantee that our students are competitive in the emerging global marketplace.
PA Core Standards
On March 15, 2013, the State Board of Education voted to adopt final-form regulations to amend Chapter 4, Academic Standards and Assessment, of Title 22, the Pennsylvania School Code. Specifically, the board’s action puts into place the Pennsylvania Common Core Standards and requires students to demonstrate proficiency on PSSAs, Keystone Exams, validated local assessments or comparable Advanced Placement/International Baccalaureate exams.
PA teachers have been provided with the standards, eligible content, and cross-walk documents in math and language arts to help with the transition. New standards have been created for science and social studies that are intended to help focus the reading and writing in those subjects. Content for those courses has not been altered.
