How to Talk to Your School Counselor:

Students:

  1. Decide it's OK! - Your school counselor knows how to help, so it is OK to ask.
  2. Make your move - Go meet the counselor. Don't put it off. See Mrs. Barry if the counselor is temporarily unavailable.
  3. Plan what to say - Write down what you want to discuss so it does not become overwhelming. Your problems are important to us. We are here for you!
  4. Listen carefully - The counselor can help you solve or adjust to the situation. You can use the information the counselor provides if you listen to what they are saying.
  5. Take Action - Commit to taking the necessary steps towards reaching your goals!

Parents:

  1. Keep an open mind - You child's school counselor is a valuable resource who is highly-trained to assist students in their academic, career, personal, social, and emotional development.
  2. Respect your child - Have goals for your child but also remember to respect the goals they set for themselves. Communicate your expectations and encourage their expression of needs and frustrations.
  3. Take control - Remember that as the adult in the family, you have the final decision concerning your child's education. Address their struggles. Tutoring is available.
  4. Get involved with school - You are the most important influence in your child's life. Get involved in the PTO and other committees within the school.
