The greenhouse and surrounding area simulates conditions found in the natural environment and opens that environment to exploration. Students participate in hands-on learning, environmental experimentation, and scientific method, all of which sparks imagination and initiates the commitment to becoming responsible stewards of the planet. Through various activities, students learn in unique and unparalleled ways the impact of issues and choices that relate to the environment, its relevance in their lives, and their impact on its future.
Each year, lead by teachers and Master Gardeners, Central students plant and grow flowers and vegetables. In early spring, these plants go on sale. Students share a wealth of information with buyers and the sale is open to the public. The students have been able to sustain the greenhouse through this fundraiser.
In studies of agriculture, students experience first-hand the growth of and varied uses for plants, both regionally and nationally. Students studying natural resources have the opportunity to investigate creatively using recyclable materials in the greenhouse.
The foundation laid by these young environmentalists, with the assistance of their teachers, paves the way for the next generation who will have an even greater responsibility for the care of our earth.
