Music Theory

MUSIC THEORY
Full Year
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Music Theory is the study of the building blocks of music.  Harmony is studied from three separate views.  They include how it is built, how to play it, and how it sounds.  Included in the course are the study of major and minor scales, triads and minor chords, simple and complex rhythms, and melodic and rhythmic dictation.  A background in music is helpful but not necessary.  Music Theory is an excellent preparation for those interested in the further study of music in college.

Full Year
Grades 9, 10, 11, 12

Comprehensive Musicianship is a course designed for the serious musician.  Students in this course will be exposed to music through multiple experiences.  Students will experience music through participating in a small group, or chamber ensemble.  Students will also be exposed to music theory and music history through a study and analysis of some of the major orchestra works throughout history.  Students will spend time listening to these pieces and learning how to identify them.  In addition, students will experience music through ear-training dictation, both rhythmic and melodic.  Finally, students will be exposed to many different types of music through the study of compositional devices used in the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, 20th Century, Broadway, and Jazz genres of music.
