The nurses promote, facilitate, and support, for children within the school system, the need for quality and comprehensive care and services that are community-based, family-centered, and culturally-competent. They devise, interpret and establish health care plans for students with special health care needs. They participate in the investigation and control of diseases and injuries among the school population. They provide and document nursing assessment, diagnosis, treatment and evaluation. They provide crisis intervention and promote and educate students to assume responsibility for managing their own health care.
In addition to mandated health screenings, medications, first aid and nursing services as outlined by the state, the certified school nurses are members of the Student Assistant Team, the Safety Committee, the Student Services Team, IEP and 504 team meetings. They lead the building health-related emergency response teams, maintain the AED's in the secondary buildings, and in-service staff on health-related issues.
