Pardon Our Pride . . .

At Hampton High School, real-world learning is brought into the classroom on a daily basis. The school’s application of the Rigor, Relevance and Relationship Framework has caught the attention of other schools nationwide, which have sought to replicate the success experienced at Hampton. Jan. 15: Hampton Community Opioid Partnership Hosts "Power Forward" Summit with Kevin Stevens
Posted 01/03/2019 10:09AM

On Jan. 15, 2019, the Hampton Community Opioid Partnership will partner with FamilyLinks to “power forward” with retired Pittsburgh Penguin Kevin Stevens in the fight against opioid addiction. The event will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. at the Hampton Community Center, 3101 McCully Road, Allison Park.

Stevens will be the featured guest speaker in the third summit the partnership has presented since January 2018, sharing his personal journey with addiction. At the height of his career, Stevens was one of the National Hockey League’s best power forwards. A Stanley Cup winner, Stevens will share the story of how injury – and addiction to opioid painkillers – ended his career. He is the co-founder of Power Forward with FamilyLinks.

In addition to Stevens, the event will feature two additional speakers. Mrs. Tina Flowers, a Hampton resident, will share the story of her son, Spenser, and the struggle with opioid addiction that took his life. Ms. De’netta Benjamin-Miller, Senior Director of Behavioral Health Services at FamilyLinks, also will address attendees about the fact that opioid addiction can happen to anyone and provide resources on how to seek help to combat an opioid addiction. Pittsburgh-based FamilyLinks is one of the region’s largest and most comprehensive human-service providers, offering significant expertise in addiction prevention and recovery programming.

Event moderator and emcee will be the Rev. Dr. Ted Martin of Hampton Presbyterian Church.

The Hampton Community Opioid Partnership consists of representatives from the Hampton Township School District, Hampton Township, the FBI's HOPE Initiative, local ministerium, and medical professionals with both UPMC Health Network and Allegheny Health Network. The partnership is committed to offering several events throughout the year, with the purpose of spreading awareness about the growing opioid epidemic. Learn more about the partnership and upcoming events by visiting its Facebook page.
