Middle School Special Education

The Middle School Special Education Program services students with academic, emotional and/or functional needs through the special education program. This program is designed to meet the needs of students based on their disability. Students with disabilities may receive instruction in the regular education setting or may require direct instruction in the special education classroom. The IEP team determines the least restrictive environment (LRE) for students.

The middle school embraces co-teaching, in which the special education teacher
co-teaches with the academic subject teacher in the regular education classroom. Students In grades 6 through 8 are placed on one of two teams. Each team has five academic subject teachers. A special education teacher works with both teams.

The middle school provides co-taught classes to students with disabilities. Each grade level has a structured study hall period (tutorial) in which students with disabilities go to the special education classroom to receive support such as reteaching of skill deficits based on the student's IEP goal(s).  The IEP team determines if a student requires a more restrictive special education environment. In these cases, the student may receive their instruction from the special education teacher in the special education classroom.  All students with disabilities participate in the regular education setting for elective courses, as well as science and social studies.

A pull-out model is available for those students with disabilities who require more intense, one-on-one instruction. The IEP team makes the decision as to whether or not a student will be included in the regular education classroom or receive direct instruction in the special education classroom.

The special education classrooms have paraprofessional support available to assist students with academic, functional or emotional needs. In addition, there are students who require more individual assistance, and as a result, may have a paraprofessional assigned to assist them in certain classes. All decisions are made through the IEP process.
