District Academic Achievements

Ranked by Family Circle Magazine as one of “America’s 10 Best Places to Raise a Family” in 2010 and in 2013 by online magazine NerdWallet as one of the “Best Towns In Pennsylvania for Young Families,” Hampton Township is a suburban residential community located approximately 12 miles north of Pittsburgh.

With a current enrollment of 3,024 students, HTSD comprises five school buildings with programs and services designed to meet the needs of all learners. The District benefits from a highly-motivated and very involved community.

Community service is a graduation requirement and numerous after-school clubs encourage additional types of involvement. The local nonprofit Hampton Alliance for Educational Excellence (HAEE) partners with the School District on fundraising events like its annual 5K race and provides numerous mini grants to the School District and its teachers. The District is continuously looking at ways to maintain and improve its community-centered culture of learning given that its primary mission is to work collaboratively with the community in support of every child becoming creative and innovative problem-solvers and communicators.

The results of District efforts on teaching for retention and relevant applications, versus basic recall, can be seen through the success of our students on assessments and their progression through higher learning. Our students’ success is evidenced by the Pittsburgh Business Times annual recognition of the School District as one of the top 10 districts in the Commonwealth of PA.  Additionally, Newsweek listed Hampton as having one of the top ranked high schools in the country five years in a row, and most recently the High School was named to the 2013 AP Honor Roll. In 2011, US News & World Report identified Hampton High School as one of the top 100 high schools in the entire country based upon our outstanding technological resources.

Building its vision for continuous improvement, the District actively pursues partnerships and initiatives that ensure rigor and relevance across a curriculum supported by a robust technology infrastructure and culture of innovation. Despite the current economic times, since 2012-13 new engineering, mobile app development, AP computer science, and Mandarin Chinese courses were added to the High School’s already rigorous program of studies.

Through an integrated arts approach to building capacity within the Hampton Middle School’s technology education and related rotation courses, the District was awarded a $20,000 STEAM grant from the regional Center for Creativity. The grant was used to develop an engineering and design-focused maker-type space. This grant enabled the purchase of 3D printers, a 3D scanner, Arduino based electronics and programming kits, laptops, iPads, CAD software, and other technologies which, in combination with ongoing teacher professional development and curriculum changes, are enabling a powerful learning shift.

At the Middle School, Mandarin Chinese was added to the World Languages program. The Middle School also was awarded a local $6,000 grant for its innovative global networking initiative using iPads, Flip cameras and other for language learning.

At the elementary level, the entire K-5 math curriculum has been updated, not just for the Pennsylvania core, but to ensure a greater depth of learning through the implementation of the Math in Focus (Singapore Math) program. Similarly, the District has implemented innovative and differentiated language arts resources that are based on the Journeys program

The District maintains high expectations by furthering our Tradition of Excellence as our students develop the knowledge that will make them successful and productive members of society.
